What to do

Camping Naranjo de Bulnes is situated in the valley of the Council of Cabrales, 135 meters, along the river Cares and the gates of the National Park Picos de Europa. From here you can make the most famous and emblematic excursions among which include the route of the Cares and the Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes. Towns like Camarmeña, Bulnes, Tielve, or Tresviso Sotres, constitute enclaves dream from which access to a myriad of routes such as The Causeway Caoro, Urdón Gorge, Pandébano, Peña Main ... The proximity of Covadonga and the lakes of Enol and Ercina, allow us to access the western massif or Cornión Peak, and get into the heart of the Rocks Santas. And the Sierra del Cuera is our only separation from the sea, whose proximity (25 minutes) allows us to spend a morning in the mountains and in the afternoon for a swim down to any of the fantastic beaches of Llanes Council.

The environment around us is the ideal place to practice outdoor activities like trekking, climbing, caving, canyoning or canoeing the rivers Cares-Deva and Sella. As if this were not enough, the lovers of good food in these lands have excellent food with which to satisfy the most discerning palates. Here the most famous is made of blue cheeses, Cabrales Quesu, jewel craft that matures in the deepest natural caves of the Picos de Europa.

CARES ROUTE: The best known of the tours in the Picos de Europa. Cain runs between Poncebos along a gorge 12 miles long plagued by extraordinary views. For the round trip takes about 5 hours walking pleasant and some technical difficulty. Its onset is 7 miles short of our site.

PICU URRIELLU or NARANJO DE BULNES: It is the highest, but it is 'the mountain' Peak. Its walls have taken place some of the greatest feats in mountaineering history in our country. With its 2,519 meters above sea level, emerges as a petrified stump in the central massif. At its base there is a shelter with 96 beds, a meeting place for climbers and hikers and is the place to access the majority of people want to get closer to Naranjo. Its western side, with a drop of 500 feet, towering above us, allowing us to see the difficulty of their routes.

BULNES: The people of the quintessential mountaineers. All ascents that were made previously to the Naranjo de Bulnes passed through this picturesque village which until recent years remained incommunicado in the heart of the mountains and all the supplies had to be neighbors with horses, through a winding path that goes by the banks of the river. This path is the option for the hikers to approach Bulnes surrounded by a landscape of rocks overwhelming. The other option is to access the village by cable car was built to destroy the secular isolation of its inhabitants. From Bulnes and following the trail in just over one hour access to the hill of Pandébano, we have some of the most extraordinary panoramic Picu Urriellu the mythic, emerging from a sea of ??beech trees.

PANORAMIC ROUTE PANDÉBANO-BULNES: This is a highly recommended and enjoyable excursion by continued contemplation of the Naranjo de Bulnes and its neighboring peaks (peaks Neverón of Urriellu and Athos, among others) through vast meadows covered with shepherds' huts and bounded by beech, constantly changing according to time of year. The route runs through the village of Bulnes where we can regain strength before facing the final hour of descent, which will lead to Poncebos.

Apart from the routes within the Picos, there are four marked excursions from the campsite:

  • Nava: This tour is a splendid view over the valley of Cabrales and the central massif of the Picos de Europa. Runs through the meadows of Nava, where numerous herds of the past pastors clearly indicate livestock in the area. Currently, only four pastors are using these facilities, even staying long periods in the pastures. No hiker who achieved back into conversation with them indifferent to the valley.
  • Vanu-Muniama: easy ride whose main attraction is the excellent view that sees the Naranjo de Bulnes or Picu Urriellu from its highest point.
  • Causeway Caoro: Crossing Portudera port through long stretches of road in good condition. This trip combines the towns of Arenas de Cabrales and Tielve, place from which traditionally the best cheese Cabrales. Beautiful corners are crossed with flocks of pastors, including most notably that of Tordín, seated in a place of unique beauty and very close Posadorio hill, from which we can see one of the best views of the massive central and eastern Picos de Europa, the Naranjo de Bulnes majestically presiding over the entire river valley view Duje.

CAMARMEÑA (viewpoint): From Poncebos starting point of the Cares Gorge, begins a steep, narrow road in just over two kilometers amounts to Camarmeña village, where there is a viewpoint overlooking the Naranjo de Bulnes. From Camarmeña you can see the huge effect of river erosion on an extraordinary panorama of limestone cliffs that rise all around us. Under our three rivers converge with individual passes: Cares, Bulnes and Duje.

COVADONGA AND LAKES. CANGAS DE ONÍS: Mountain, landscape and history come together in these places. Cangas de Onis with its famous Roman bridge and the shrine of the Holy Cross, Covadonga with the Basilica and Royal Estate, and the famous lakes of Enol and Ercina, triangle make this a must for anyone who want to be a vision of whole area. From the lakes also leave many routes in the heart of the Massif Cornión.

LLANES - BEACHES: Who has not dreamed of, after a long hike through the mountains, the possibility to round off the day with a swim at the beach? This is possible. We are limited to 25 minutes of the council of Llanes, who has 32 beaches along its coast. Beaches and cliffs bordered by the green of the meadows, that make the most beautiful coast of Llanes Spain.

QUESU ROUTE AND CIDER: Our friends Manolo and Javier Niembro created a route in the town of Asiegu in giving a comprehensive talk about the traditional way of rural life and livestock, while they explain how they made the Quesu Cabrales, with visits to a cheese factory and ripening cave included. Moreover, as natural cider processors are shown the process of making this drink. As if this were not enough, depending on the shift chosen for the visit will give us to eat or dine in a complete espicha, traditional food Asturias.

Dear friend, created the Torraya, a core teaching on rural areas, where Pepe will explain to the amenity that characterizes the traditional life in the village of Asturias, different breeds of indigenous livestock visit to a shepherd's hut, the visit to a cider tasting this drink and typically Asturian ... and gastronomy, as Torraya also offers meals.
